Beyond the sidelines: How Our Lady of the Lake Sports Medicine keeps Baton Rouge moving

When it comes to sports medicine in Baton Rouge, J. Michael Robinson, M.D., stands on the front lines—not just on the sidelines. As head team physician for multiple LSU sports, including baseball, track, swim and tennis, he’s no stranger to high-stakes athlete care. But his work at Our Lady of the Lake Health extends far beyond Tiger Stadium.

INNOVATION IN CONCUSSION CARE

Concussions have been a hot topic for decades, and the way they are treated keeps evolving. “Concussion care is always changing,” Dr. Robinson explains. “One of the newest treatments we’re using is hyperbaric treatment to help speed up recovery. It’s shown some promise in getting athletes feeling better, faster.”

Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center boasts a state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, which has been used to accelerate concussion recovery for numerous LSU student-athletes. Dr. Robinson envisions a future where this technology is more widely available. “In athletics, being out even one day is a big deal. We want to bring that same level of urgency and recovery to everyone—not just athletes.”

HEALING WITH THE BODY’S OWN POWER

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are another innovative treatment utilized at Our Lady of the Lake. “It’s a newer offering for us in the last year,” Dr. Robinson says. The process involves drawing a patient’s blood, concentrating the platelets and injecting the plasma into the injured area to stimulate healing.

“You’re using your own body’s healing ability to repair certain injuries,” he explains. Though PRP treatments aren’t widely covered by insurance yet, they’re becoming a sought-after option for athletes and everyday people alike.

LSU’S FOOTBALL RECOVERY SUITE RAISES THE BAR

Our Lady of the Lake’s Championship Health Partnership with LSU debuted a state-of-the-art Football Operations Recovery Center in September 2024—timed perfectly with football season. It’s packed with everything athletes need to recover quickly and effectively.

“The newer stuff? We’ve got it,” Dr. Robinson says. “And as new treatments emerge, we’ll continue expanding. It’s awesome to see.” The goal? Extend that same high-level care to weekend warriors, high school athletes and even those injured off the field—like in car accidents or household mishaps.

“Life happens,” he says. “It’s not just about sports injuries. It’s about keeping people healthy and moving.”

FASTER CARE, FEWER SURGERIES

With his specialized sports medicine training, Dr. Robinson offers a major advantage: faster, non-surgical solutions. “Having access to someone trained in sports medicine means you get in quicker and, often, recover without surgery,” he explains.

The future of sports medicine at Our Lady of the Lake isn’t just about star athletes. It’s about bringing those same innovations to the whole community.
