Why does LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward view his management style as more executive producer and less CEO? What’s the No. 1 trait he seeks in a leader? And what lyrics from a Stealers Wheel song best describe how he feels about NIL?
He’ll share those insights and more on the June episode of Strictly Business. The webcast will air at 11 a.m. June 21. Register here.
Known for building championship teams, the Baton Rouge native and LSU alumnus was named athletics director in April 2019, after successful stints at the University of Washington and then Texas A&M.
Under his stewardship, the LSU football team earned the 2019 CFP National Championship with one of the most dominating seasons in college gridiron history. LSU posted a 15-0 record, including seven wins over Top 10 teams, and quarterback Joe Burrow became the first Tiger since 1959 to win the Heisman Trophy.
His big-name coaching hires—Kim Mulkey in women’s basketball, Jay Johnson in baseball and football’s Brian Kelly—have captured national attention and success. Mulkey, a Hall of Fame coach, led the Tigers earlier this year to their first-ever basketball national title. Johnson has kept the Tiger baseball team near the No. 1 ranking for much of the college baseball season, and Brian Kelly, after a 10-win season and an SEC Championship Game appearance in 2022, has the Tigers mentioned as a national title contender for this fall’s campaign.
After graduating from LSU in 1985, Woodward was a co-owner of a government and public relations firm in Baton Rouge that provided strategic policy direction to Fortune 500 corporations. He then came to LSU as a senior member of then-Chancellor Mark Emmert’s staff.
