Baton Rouge-based Alluwee Productions served as one of the executive producers on Reagan, a new Ronald Reagan biopic starring Dennis Quaid.

The film, which hit theaters on Friday, chronicles Reagan’s journey from Hollywood to the Oval Office. Penelope Ann Miller stars alongside Quaid as Nancy Reagan.

Patrick Mulhearn, an industry consultant who served as executive director of Celtic Studios from 2009 to 2017, tells Daily Report that Alluwee—a client of his—considers the film’s opening weekend a success. It earned more than $10 million at the box office over the four-day Labor Day weekend, finishing fourth behind Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus and It Ends With Us.

Reagan exceeded everyone’s expectations,” Mulhearn says.

Shot on a $25 million budget, Reagan was financed and produced independently after a number of major Hollywood studios passed on the project. Mulhearn calls the film a “testament to how independent film financing outside of the studio system can work.”

Reagan has been received positively by general audiences thus far; it’s currently sitting at a 98% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Critics, however, have been less receptive. Of the 50 critic reviews assessed by Rotten Tomatoes, only 20% have been positive.

While Reagan is Alluwee’s first project, Mulhearn writes on LinkedIn that future projects are already in the works and that he “can’t wait to share some news about what’s on deck.”
