This wellness bar and grocery store is bringing healthy foods to Mid City

Mid City residents will soon have access to more healthy and fresh foods.

Terrez Collins, a registered nurse and owner of cold-pressed juice company C.A.K.E.D, Juice Co. and wellness bar Trap Haus, is opening a storefront on the corner of Government and South 13th streets on May 17.

After years of treating sick patients and switching to a vegan lifestyle, Collins wanted to share the benefits and joy of healthy eating with her community.

“It’s all about showing people what food is really about,” Collins tells Daily Report. “Food is so much more than just food, but we’ve kind of just generalized it and made it fast, quick and added crap to it. I want to educate and show visitors that this could really change your life.”

Trap Haus, located at 1300 Government Street, will sell cold-pressed juices, additive-free smoothie bowls, plant-based dishes and fresh produce. One half of the store will feature a build-your-own smoothie bar, where customers can choose an in-house-made base and fresh toppings to make a custom smoothie bowl. It will also sell rotating vegan-friendly dishes like New Orleans-style po-boys with mushrooms, vegan gumbo and red beans and rice.

The other half of the storefront will include a small produce grocery store that sells fresh fruit and vegetables. Collins plans to accept SNAP benefits as a form of payment to expand healthy food access for locals in food deserts.

“If you look at the definition of a trap house, it means a house that sells drugs,” Collins says. “Everything that we consume, essentially, is a drug, whether it’s from nature, the drugs that we take over the counter, or from the pharmacy. It’s a play on words, and it’s also about turning a negative into a positive. So basically, we sling drugs, but it’s in its most natural form. Nature’s drugs.”

Trap Haus was established in 2022 in New Roads. It opened its second wellness bar at Southern University’s recreation center. The Government Street brick-and-mortar will be its third location in Louisiana. Collins intentionally selected her store’s locations based on limited access to fresh foods in the area. Soon, she plans to convert a van into a C.A.K.E.D. Juice Co. mobile juice and smoothie bar to pop up in Baton Rouge and surrounding cities, selling health-conscious foods.
