This oil field services provider is the latest company to get hit by a cyberattack

Oil field services company Halliburton has joined the growing ranks of firms hit by cyberattacks, The Wall Street Journal reports.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Halliburton writes that an unauthorized party gained access to some of its systems. In response, the Houston company has taken some systems offline to help protect them and launched an internal investigation, with the support of external advisers, to assess and remediate the unauthorized activity.

The company also says it is working to restore its systems and to identify any effects of the cyber incident.

Data breaches have been on the rise this year, with global cyberattacks up 30% in the second quarter of 2024, according to a July report from cybersecurity intelligence provider Check Point Research.
