Roundup: Political chat / Sugarcane harvest / Interest rate cut


    Luncheon speakers: Southern University Political Scientist Albert Samuels and former East Baton Rouge Metro Councilman Darrell Glasper will be the guest speakers at the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday. Samuels, a Democrat, and Republican Glasper will discuss the Nov. 5 election as debates start this week. The Press Club meets on Mondays in the ballroom at Drusilla Place Catering, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. and the program beginning at 12:15 p.m. Learn more about the event. 

    Drive safe: As the sugarcane harvest begins on Monday, the West Baton Rouge Parish sheriff is advising drivers to use caution on the roads as farmers transport the harvest to the mill. Sheriff Jeff Bergeron says that people driving on West Baton Rouge roads should exercise caution and have patience on the highways. Read more from WAFB-TV. 

    Modest decreases ahead: The Federal Reserve is likely to lower interest rates by a quarter-point next week and at each of the two meetings that follow, according to economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. The majority of the 46 economists surveyed see policymakers opting for a more gradual pace of rate reductions than the full percentage point of cuts traders anticipate through the rest of the year.
