    New leader: Gov. Jeff Landry on Thursday announced that Gary Westcott has been tapped to serve as secretary of the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. Westcott most recently served as the department’s deputy secretary. “At a time where public safety is a top priority for citizens across our state, I can think of no better person to lead the [DOC],” a statement from Landry reads.

    Deli meat: Nine people have now died in a listeria outbreak linked to recalled Boar’s Head deli meat, according to the CDC. At least 57 people have now been reported to be sickened by the illness. All of those individuals have been hospitalized. This marks the largest listeria outbreak since one in 2011 that was linked to cantaloupe. Read more from The Hill.

    Deadline approaching: Louisiana taxpayers have until Sept. 6 to claim millions in state tax refunds before they become unclaimed property. The Louisiana Department of Revenue has sent Notice of Unclaimed Property letters to 18,801 individual and business taxpayers advising them to claim their refunds before they are transferred by law to the Unclaimed Property Division of the state treasurer’s office.
