Louisiana AG secures temporary stay blocking federal parole policy

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has secured a temporary administrative stay against the Biden-Harris administration’s “parole in place” policy, which would have allowed thousands of undocumented immigrants to remain in the U.S. while applying for permanent residency.

On Aug. 23, Louisiana joined 15 other states in a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security over the policy. That lawsuit argues that the policy circumvents federal law, which requires undocumented immigrants to leave the country before applying for most immigration benefits.

According to Murrill, the policy could have allowed 7,000 undocumented immigrants in Louisiana to remain in the state.

It is worth noting that a group of undocumented immigrants and their families filed a motion Monday seeking to join the federal government in defending the policy in court.

The temporary stay blocks the policy from taking effect in Louisiana while the lawsuit is adjudicated.
