State legislators this spring will consider a proposal to allow the governor to add two-at large seats to the Louisiana Public Service Commission, Louisiana Illuminator reports.
The LPSC, which determines how much utilities can charge their customers for services, currently comprises five members, each elected from their respective multiparish districts. House Bill 364, sponsored by Rep. Daryl Deshotel, R-Marksville, is a proposed constitutional amendment to allow the governor to add two additional members to the commission.
The gubernatorial appointees would be able to serve two consecutive four-year terms. The five elected commissioners are currently limited to three consecutive six-year terms.
The commission regulates utility rates for a wide range of services including electricity, water, gas, cable television, phone and internet service.
Utility providers—such as Cleco, Entergy Louisiana and DEMCO—need LPSC approval before raising rates or adding fees to customers’ bills.
