E-commerce and corrugated box sales are booming in the US


    Online sales are outperforming offline sales when it comes to the pace of growth, according to the latest quarterly e-commerce sales report from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Fast Company reports

    American consumers bought $291.6 billion worth of goods through e-commerce retailers in the second quarter of 2024, which is up 6.7% compared to the same time period in 2023. The number of online sales year-over-year growth was more than three times the total retail sales growth. 

    The surge in e-commerce purchases may also be affecting the corrugated box industry. According to the Fibre Box Association, shipments of corrugated boxes increased 3.2% from the first to second quarter of 2024. 

    Since retail items are often sold in cardboard boxes, whether from an online or offline business, the uptick in corrugated box shipments can’t solely be linked to e-commerce. However, Rachel Kenyon, senior vice president at the Fibre Box Association, believes increased e-commerce sales did play a major role in the long-awaited rebound of corrugated box shipments in the U.S.
