Changes could be coming soon to state-funded nonprofits

A bill advancing through the Legislature would require nonprofit groups that receive public dollars in Louisiana to face tighter oversight and more robust reporting requirements, The Center Square reports.

Senate Bill 184, by Sen. Heather Cloud, R-Allen, aims to standardize and streamline the way nongovernmental organizations apply for and report on state funding. The proposal is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Finance Committee again on Monday.

If the proposal is approved, nonprofits would be required to provide financial audits, statements of public purpose and data on performance outcomes before receiving state appropriations. An organization would also need to maintain a physical office in Louisiana, be registered as a nonprofit for at least a year, and keep administrative costs under 15% of total expenditures.
