Are you staring at your phone too much at work?

It’s become common to glance at your phone any time you get a notification or as a response to boredom or downtime, but that little tic could create problems at work, The Washington Post reports.

While our growing reliance on our phones has been normalized in some social settings, it does have the potential to be detrimental to your career if you’re not careful. You could leave a bad impression, lose productivity or miss important information—all of which could result in the loss of leadership opportunities, promotions and even jobs.

So, what can you do to assess and control your relationship with your phone at work?

For starters, track your usage to gain an understanding of just how bad the problem really is. Once you’ve gained that understanding, it’s time to do a detox—substantially reduce your usage over the course of a week or a month.
