Roundup: Education freedom / Heat in Death Valley / Mayoral debate


    Highest gains: Louisiana has emerged as a national leader in education freedom, jumping to fourth place in the latest Education Freedom Report Card produced by the Heritage Foundation. The Pelican State made the most significant leap in the country, advancing from 18th place in 2023 to its current position, thanks to notable improvements in school choice, teacher freedom, and academic transparency, alongside a high return on investment in education spending.     EMS kept busy: After a scorcher in Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon, many LSU fans are calling for all games in Death Valley in September to be played at night. First responders dealt with dozens of calls for heat exhaustion throughout the game. Read more from WBRZ-TV. 

    Campaign trail: Incumbent mayor Sharon Weston-Broome, Democrat Ted James and Republican Sid Edwards will participate in a debate this evening. The debate will be at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church starting at 7 p.m. and will be moderated by Tony King, president of the Baton Rouge Area Association of Black Journalists.
