Health Tip of the Week, sponsored by Baton Rouge General: Could my medication contribute to bone loss?

There are two types of osteoporosis. Primary osteoporosis is strongly connected to aging and is the type you’ve most likely heard about. Secondary osteoporosis can develop when an underlying medical condition or certain medications interrupt new bone tissue from forming. It is common in patients with diabetes, lupus, celiac disease, chronic kidney disease, and liver disease, among others. Medications that could impact bone tissue include long-term oral corticosteroids, heparin, methotrexate, thyroid hormone and others. If you take these medications, speak with your doctor to determine your risk of osteoporosis. Learn more about bone loss and take a bone health assessment quiz.
