Donut revolution

On most days, Andrew Linton wakes up well before 4 a.m. to get to Lucky Morning Donuts (Map it!). His shift kicks into high gear between 5 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., when everyone from construction workers to unlucky gamblers from L'auberge come in to have a sweet treat.

Like a few other donut places in Baton Rouge, Linton offers the traditional glazed and chocolate-covered donuts. However, he has branched out into new territory with flavors like peanut butter, Mardi Gras king cake, maple and bacon and strawberry-glazed donuts. Those flavors were based on customer requests, and Lucky Morning Donuts isn't the only shop in town expanding its donut offerings.

Fleur de Lis Donuts' (Map it!) owner Suzie Boucher didn't want to have the same old donuts. "It amazes me why anyone would just want to eat a glazed donut when you have so many options that you could put on top of it," Boucher says. Some of the stores flavors include a peanut butter twist topped with chocolate icing and a key lime donut.

Tiger Deauxnuts (Map it!) prides itself on gourmet treats and features a rotating cast of donut flavors including apple pie, vanilla jalapeno, orange cranberry-oatmeal, s'mores, and others. The store also has a permanent selection of maple and bacon, Bananas Foster, strawberry cream cheese and chocolate peanut butter donuts.

Even longstanding favorite Thee Heavenly Donut is livening up its menu with a range of kolaches, such as the boudin and jalapeņo pepper-jack smoked sausage filled dough.

Wrapping up National Burger Month

After last week's look at some of Baton Rouge's best burger joints, we gave the mic to our readers so they could let us know their favorite places to get the American classic.

Among the honorable mentions from our readers are some usual suspects—Five Guys, Mugshots, Dearman's (Map it!) and Fat Cow.

Via Twitter, @rfelix says his favorite burger is from the Curbside food truck: "There is no other. All hail THE burger." @ShoeFanatic614 says Mason's Grill is "hands down the best burger in this city."

While we did get a lot of fans talking up Burgersmith (Map it!), Cindy Souter Abadie tells us that Portobello's Bocage location has her favorite—the Red Stick burger with grilled onions, Gorgonzola cheese and applewood smoked bacon. Miriam Juban says Hawk's Nest (Map it!), a restaurant in the Sherwood/Coursey area known for its shrimp remoulade, has a classic burger. The new tap room The Pelican House also got a shout-out.

If you want to give 225 your two cents on the best burger in town, you can drop us an e-mail at editor@225batonrouge.com, leave a comment here or tell us on Twitter, @225batonrouge. National Burger Month ends May 31.

A healthy margarita? With Elkarita, it's possible

What better way to stay healthy this summer than with a refreshing, frozen margarita? If it sounds too good to be true, it isn't. Baton Rouge native Elke Ellzey is the creator of Elkarita, a natural, no-sugar-added non-alcoholic drink mix. Elkarita comes in three flavors: lime, mango and pomegranate. Each mix has fewer than 40 calories, and the four ingredients used are all pronounceable. Ellzey says that although the mixes were originally intended for combining with spirits, she suggests adding it to water for the kids and even using it as a marinade for cooking.

Ellzey's inspiration for her mixes is her husband David, a Type 1 diabetic. "When I met my husband, I realized how much sugar is in a [serving] of limeade," Ellzey says. Famous among her friends for her margaritas, she sought to create a margarita mix that wasn't full of sugar so her husband could enjoy her signature drink. A year later, Elkarita was born. Ellzey is currently balancing being a working mom of two and trying to run the business on her own, but she has plans of expanding her line of products to include a Louisiana Strawberry flavor. Currently, Elkarita can be purchased at local grocers including Matherne's, Calandro's and Maxwell's Market to name a few. For more information, visit elkarita.com.—Sydney Blanchard

From 225: An exotic twist on the margarita

You might take one look at Kona Grill's Hibiscus Margarita and think it's too much. The drink has an exotic name, a raspberry color, and the actual flower perched on the edge of the glass. It wouldn't be out of place on an episode of Gossip Girl. All visual cons aside, Jeff Roedel explains why the drink should be famous in this month's 225. Read Roedel's take here.

Authentic jambalaya cook-off at Gonzales Jambalaya Festival

There’s no better time to test Gonzales’s "Jambalaya Capital of the World" claim than at the Jambalaya Festival held over Memorial Day weekend. Gonzales will once again host its annual four-day festival complete with carnival rides, a 5K race and 1-mile fun run, antique car show, live music, and above all, the World Jambalaya Cook-Off. Think barbecue contests are hardcore? It takes both stamina and a keen sense of timing to prepare authentic Cajun jambalaya in a cast-iron pot over hardwood. Contestants can only use regulation ingredients— long grain rice, chicken and their choice of an allowable list of spices and aromatic vegetables. The intense standardization ups the ante on the cooking process—the judges aren’t looking for over-the-top creativity, but perfect workmanship. For more information on the festival and cook-off, check out Maggie Heyn Richardson's full article from 225 here. —Maggie Heyn Richardson

From Spatula Diaries: Lychees are in season—it's martini time

Lychees have a sweet, floral flavor and translucent flesh. You just have to peel back the thick, pinkish skin to find the springy and succulent treat. They're great for snacking and making luscious summer cocktails.

Lychee season starts in earnest in June. A few merchants around town are starting to see small shipments of the fresh tropical tree fruit. This week, the Asian supermarket Vinh Phat, began receiving lychees still on the branch from a vendor in Florida. The season there lasts only about a month, so grab Vinh Phat's lychees while you can (call ahead at 273-1175 to be sure). For a few lychee-infused drink recipes, read Maggie Heyn Richardson's latest blog post here.

Wood Fired Pizza food truck involved in accident

A popular Baton Rouge food truck will be out of commission temporarily after it was struck by an alleged drunk driver. Bogdan Mocanu's Wood Fired Pizza truck was hit Tuesday night around 8:30 p.m. Mocanu says the incident occurred after a successful food truck event at Pecan Grove Elementary School in Gonzales.

The Gonzales Police Department confirms the accident and states the driver hit the food truck trailer as well as another vehicle. Officers say the driver has been charged with a DUI and reckless operation of a vehicle.

Mocanu says his trailer is destroyed. On Wednesday afternoon, Mocanu was in poor spirits. Though he wants to begin serving customers again as soon as possible, he doesn't see that as a possibility right now.

"I think I will lay low for a little bit, and I hate doing this," Mocanu says. "It's my passion to cook for all these people. It's the way I live my crazy dreams. For me, I lost my way of expressing myself. I love the contact with the people every single day."

Mocanu says he will meet with his insurance company and lawyer before making any decisions. He added that a few local chefs and food truck owners have asked how they could help. Though he appreciates the support, the accident has made him rethink how he serves his food.

"I'm now thinking of opening a brick and mortar location at this point," he says. "It might be the time."

Tuesday night's accident was the second car accident for Mocanu in 45 days, he says. Just a little over a month ago, he says his truck was t-boned.

Ruffino's opens Lafayette location

Ruffino's on the River opened this week in Lafayette. The new upscale restaurant is in the former Cochon Lafayette building, located in the River Ranch development on the Vermilion River. Co-owner Ruffin Rodrigue told Baton Rouge Business Report that the new restaurant's menu will fare better than its former tenant. Like its Baton Rouge location, Ruffino's on the River focuses on steaks, seafood and Italian dishes, and not Cajun fare "that people in Lafayette cook themselves," Rodrigue says. For a full look at Ruffino's on the River's menu and more, visit ruffinoslafayette.com.

Bad Guys, Good Eats! Pop-Up Dinner at Restaurant IPO

Chef and 225 contributor Jay D. Ducote and Chef Chris Wadsworth hosted the Bad Guys, Good Eats! dinner at Restaurant IPO Wednesday night. The dinner was themed around famous movie villains, pairing cocktails and ales with plates of food resembling famous baddies like The Joker, Lord Voldemort, Hannibal Lector, and many others. The highlights of the night were the three middle courses—a black bean soup laced with blood sausage to signify Lord Voldemort, a brace of coneys on black eyed peas resembling Sauron, and lamb medallions atop a fava bean puree to pay homage to the famous favorite of Hannibal Lector.
