The Perkins Road property that once housed Rock Paper Taco is set to become the first Capital Region location for Vals, a New Orleans-based restaurant featuring Mexican-inspired cuisine.

Salt Water Development LLC bought the property from TSSAF Properties for $1.5 million, according to a deal filed earlier this week with the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court’s office.

Donnie Jarreau represented the seller. Matthew Kohnke, a co-owner of Vals, represented the buyer. Matthew Shirley of Saurage Rotenberg and Tanner Strohschein of Bang Realty brokered the deal for the buyer.

Kohnke and the rest of the team behind the James Beard award-winning CureCo hospitality services company own and operate Vals. The group also owns Cure and Cane & Table in New Orleans and Dauphine’s in Washington, D.C.

The restaurant’s New Orleans location on Freret Street near Valence Street has been open for four years. There is no timeline for when the Baton Rouge location will open.

Jarreau, Hank Saurage IV and Edward Rotenberg are the listed managers of TSSAF Properties. They purchased the building for $1.4 million in 2016.

There were plans to transform the location into a funeral home last year when Jarreau applied to have the space rezoned from restaurant use to light commercial, however the deal never closed.

Rock Paper Taco, which began as a food truck concept, closed its Perkins Road restaurant last February.
