While previous rounds of Louisiana Fortify Homes Program grants have operated on a first-come, first-served basis, future rounds will use a lottery system to select grant recipients.

Through the LFHP, eligible homeowners can receive $10,000 grants to upgrade their roofs to better withstand hurricane-force winds. The program got its start in 2023 as a response to Louisiana’s ongoing insurance crisis. Some 1,300 grants have been issued thus far.

Registration for the next round of LFHP grants will open at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20. Homeowners must register during that three-day period to participate in the lottery, and homeowners who attempted to apply during a previous round of grants but were not selected will need to register for this new round.

Registration will be open to residents of the Louisiana Coastal Zone, an area that includes the Capital Region parishes of Ascension, Livingston and Tangipahoa. Review additional eligibility information here.

Once the registration period closes, 300 registrants will be randomly selected to receive grants and an additional 200 will be placed on a waitlist for the same round. Selected registrants will receive an email from the LFHP.

If selected, homeowners will be financially responsible for having their homes evaluated by a FORTIFIED-certified evaluator as well as for any roof upgrade costs that exceed their grant amounts.

For future rounds of grants, the LFHP is currently considering whether registration should be limited to homeowners with low-to-moderate incomes and whether registration should be opened up to residents outside of the Louisiana Coastal Zone. Details will be shared later this year.
