Louisiana Department of State Civil Service could face extinction

Louisiana’s Department of State Civil Service could be dissolved if state legislators do not pass legislation extending the department’s term, The Center Square reports

The State Civil Service statutory term is to be discontinued officially by Jan. 1, 2027, though the process is to begin by Jan. 1, 2026, assuming no legislation is passed to continue the term.

If the next legislative session does not include an extension of the department’s term, its operations, duties and resources will be reallocated to other agencies. The 2027 deadline is important for more reasons than the department’s utility.

The House and Governmental Affairs Committee discussed the deadline earlier this week.

“We play a vital role in ensuring the state government operates effectively and efficiently, and in the interest of the citizens,” said Byron Decoteau Jr., director of the Louisiana State Civil Service, at the Monday hearing. “You cannot deliver services without a strong and skilled workforce.”
