State Rep. Dixon McMakin, R-Baton Rouge, is proposing Louisiana college athletes receive a state income tax break on money earned through name, image and likeness deals, The Center Square reports.
House Bill 166 would allow student-athletes enrolled in Louisiana public and state-supported private colleges to deduct their NIL compensation from their state taxable income if signed into law by Gov. Jeff Landry.
“We want to try to level the playing field and keep our best and brightest in our state,” Dixon says.
Alabama, Texas and Georgia have also introduced similar legislation.
If passed and signed into law, the measure would apply to income earned beginning Jan. 1 next year.
