Carnival in the capital

Like rare and dazzling jewels plucked from crowns and tossed onto a vast marble and granite expanse, Mardi Gras, Louisiana style, always splashes memorably into the corridors of power and politics in Washington, D.C.

What’s Up

As a clerk at The Royal Standard, Hanley Poche helps maintain a popular, Best of 225-winning gift store. She also maintains an impeccable wardrobe. We asked this Baton Rouge native double majoring in biology and French at LSU to share with us her style picks for the spring.

Iverstine Farms Harvest Hangout

Fall is in full swing. The evenings are getting chilly and the cold dew on the grass in the morning is a daily reminder that the oppressive heat of the summer months is starting to make it's retreat. It's the time of year that makes you start to think about cornfields, ghouls and ghosts, hayrides, apple cider, pumpkins and roast turkey.

Market trend

The largest fundraiser in the state takes place this month boasting a brand new look. Hollydays, the Junior League of Baton Rouge's annual market, has long been a regional favorite. Four days of holiday shopping raises as much as $500,000 each year for community projects that affect 300,000 lives in the Capital Region. But for the hardworking women of the Junior League, that success is not enough. The 2012 Hollydays steering committee revamped a classic to attract new patrons and offer a fresh experience for those who have shopped here before.

Literary reunion

The Louisiana Book Festival will return Oct. 27 to the grounds of the state capitol. Authors who have attended the festival previously, many of whom will be featured again this year, shared their thoughts with 225 on what makes the festival great—from taking over the State Capitol building, to Louisiana Center for the Book Director Jim Davis and the festival's volunteers, to the readers and other writers who turn out on what is always a beautiful fall day in Baton Rouge.

The Voodoo that you do

As Jazz Fest's younger brother with a penchant for indie and alternative rock, Voodoo Fest has been pretty consistent in bringing something for everyone in its 13 years at City Park in New Orleans. Previous years have seen the Beastie Boys, Queens of the Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer and the Black Keys.

Freaky Philanthropy

This time last year, a float depicting a creepy version of Alice in Wonderland paraded through downtown Baton Rouge, along with one inspired by Poltergeist, with krewe members dressed as quotable character Carol Anne. Five thousand spectators watched these and about 20 other floats march behind a fitting grand marshal, the Louisiana Art and Science Museum's Ptolemaic period mummy—or at least his likeness—who led the zombies, vampires and other creatures from the backseat of a vintage red convertible.

Future uncertain for international fest

When the Baton Rouge Center for World Affairs had to shut down its office on Government Street in April, director Monika Olivier relocated the non-profit to a bedroom in her house.
