Why do you do what you do?
To contribute to the world as I envision it can be.
What is your greatest professional accomplishment?
I’m still fairly young, so hopefully it is yet to be seen--but to date it would be leading PCA LA through the trials and tribulations of the last two years of recovery without shutting down services, while at the same time serving as president of the board of the Children’s Coalition during the creation of the Community Plan for Children and implementing successful after-school programming at Renaissance Village.
What was your first job?
First “real” job after college was with SERVE! Baton Rouge, leading a team of inner city youth in neighborhood safety projects in the mid-city area.
What is the best advice you've ever received?
Run your non-profit like a business and don’t neglect your family.
Who do you most admire in the local business community and why?
There are so many great business leaders here that are devoted to the community. In my sector, I admire those long-standing and effective directors who have really made their agencies a successful contribution to the community and value collaboration such as Carol Gikas (LASM), Melissa Flournoy (LANO), and Barry Meyer. I could name many more.
If you could have any job other than your own, what would it be?
To run a very large for-profit, international conglomerate—systems that large amaze me. On the other hand, I would also love to get back to direct service and helping people at the community level, one family at a time.
What is the greatest personal or professional obstacle you've overcome?
Aside from the impact of the hurricanes, I have been very lucky to not have had any major setbacks in my life.
If you started over, what would you do differently?
Spend less time worrying.
What is your prescription for life?
Believe in success and work to make it happen.
What book are you currently reading?
The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman
If you could have dinner with any three living people, who would they be? (Authors? Leaders?)
My husband, Tom Hanks, and Prince
Who would play you in a movie?
Would love for it to be Laura Dern
What do you do to unwind?
Laugh, have a beer
What is the most expensive purchase you've made for yourself?
Can’t think of anything just for myself—I’m not a big shopper
What is your favorite weekend activity?
Family time
What's your theme song?
“You’ve Got the Music in You” by The New Radicals
What's your favorite spot in Baton Rouge?
The bench in front of my house on a cool, fall day watching my kids play outside
How do you take your coffee/tea?
Coffee-a little sweet, a little light
What is your favorite movie? TV show? Band?
Angus; Law & Order: SVU; no one favorite band—enjoy lots of genres
What is your favorite gadget?
My Treo
What is something that you can't live without?
My family
If you could change one thing about Baton Rouge, what would it be?
The very segregated educational systems
