The "aha" moment

For Dr. Vance Misuraca, the moment he knew he wanted to be an orthodontist came so early in life he can't remember it. “It's kind of weird, but I always knew I wanted to be an orthodontist,” he says. After graduating from dental school at LSU and completing his orthodontic residency, he began practicing in Baton Rouge in 1996. As he opened locations in Baton Rouge, Denham Springs and Prairieville, he wanted to offer his patients more than just satellite offices. “I'm a little unique in that all of my facilities are standalone,” he says. “We can do everything.” The success of his offices led him to begin work on a fourth, in Central; this time offering pediatric dentistry as well as orthodontics. The 5,200-square-foot facility is projected to open in spring 2013.

R&D

Misuraca places emphasis on using technology to increase efficiency. He says his paperless offices allow patients to visit him whenever and wherever it's most convenient for them. All of their information will be there before they arrive. “You see me in Prairieville today; you can see me in Denham in three weeks,” he says. It's more than just the files, though. All of the imaging and X-ray equipment is digital, and they offer appointment reminders via email and text messages. The waiting room has video game stations for children.

Hitting the market

Orthodontics is a business that relies heavily on referrals. Because Misuraca doesn't have any partner orthodontists on his staff, he has to be available for his patients almost year-round. He says he is done expanding after the Central office is open, not wanting to stretch himself too thin. “I'm not going to tell you I don't work 51 weeks a year because I do,” he says.

Misuraca says:

“I believe you should bring your service to the patient instead of the patient coming to you.”
