News roundup: CABL releases citizen guide to 2012 education reforms … Teachers union says it's moving forward with challenge to voucher program … New entrepreneurial program launched at LSU's business and tech center
Turn and face the change: CABL has produced a six-page guide on Louisiana's various education reforms that were pushed by Gov. Bobby Jindal earlier this year and approved during the legislative session. CABL says the guide is meant to give people a comprehensive look at all education reforms that were signed into law this year, and not just the statewide expansion of the voucher program, which has garnered the most media attention. You can check out the guide here.
Pressing on: Leaders of the Louisiana Association of Educators say they're moving forward with a legal challenge to the state's new voucher program despite the Louisiana Supreme Court's announcement Thursday that it won't issue an injunction to halt spending on the program. "The courts only denied our request for a spending halt; the merits of the case have not yet been determined," says LAE President Joyce Haynes. "The constitutionality of these laws is still very much in question. Until a final decision is made on the merits, we will continue our appeal to the courts." Read the LAE's complete statement on the matter at its website here.
Learning to fly: The Louisiana Business & Technology Center at LSU has launched a new program for scientific and technology entrepreneurs to assist them in getting their ideas refined, developed, funded and commercialized. The nine-week program is designed specifically for early-stage researchers and inventors, to provide them with a structured approach through the use of time-proven tools. Applications for the fall session, which runs from Aug. 29 through Oct. 24, are due by Thursday.
