Jindal won't be Romney's running mate, Roemer says

Former Gov. Buddy Roemer says he does not think Gov. Bobby Jindal will be selected as the vice presidential Republican nominee to run alongside Mitt Romney. Roemer, who was speaking at the Baton Rouge Press Club today, is fresh off his own failed bid for the White House that emphasized campaign finance reform. While "thinking like a politician," Roemer predicted the Republican National Committee and Romney campaign will select a politician from either Florida or Ohio, attempting to secure future victory in those states. Roemer cites the lack of excitement from the electorate in a "very close" election as a reason Romney would focus on the two powerful electoral swing states with his vice presidential choice. If Jindal isn't selected as Romney's running-mate, Roemer says, the governor's skills and political knowledge will likely garner him an offer for a Cabinet position in a Romney-led White House. Roemer's talk focused on campaign finance reform, on the heels of his presidential run—during which he accepted no donation larger than $100—and a recent appearance before a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee about the issue. "Having been in both of the major parties for 20 years, they're both the same," Roemer says. "They're both addicted to the money." He proposes his own seven-step plan to reform campaign finance law, forcing all candidates for federal office to give full disclosure of their donors and how much they have received. "Congress is not only broken, it's bought," Roemer says. —Frederick Holl
