Loupe to recommend Woman’s Hospital as potential site for Crime Committee projects
Metro Councilman Chandler Loupe says he intends to recommend that the Metro Council Crime Committee consider using the soon-to-be-vacant Woman's Hospital campus on Airline Highway for some of its prioritized public safety projects. “Let them figure out if it would fit a need. I hope it would. For $19 million, which is what I was told the asking price is, we can get a 25-acre complex with great parking, a well-maintained clean facility with office buildings, right darn near in the middle of town,” Loupe says. “I would hope it would be something they would consider. That money would go a long way. You could even put the juvenile facility there. You could do a lot of things with it. It’s a huge, huge complex.” Woman’s Hospital is planning to move to a new campus farther south on Airline Highway on June 3, 2012. Councilman Trae Welch, who heads the Crime Committee, says he’s not sure whether the campus would fit any of the committee's priority projects—which include a new parish prison, juvenile detention center and truancy center—but is willing to consider it. "I'd much rather have a building in play instead of leaving it out to rot," he says. The Crime Committee will meet Monday at 4 p.m. on the 11th floor of the 19th Judicial District Courthouse, 222 St. Louis St. —David Jacobs and Ian McGibboney
